ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AEC...TUESDAY, JANUARY 24

2012 AEC Annual Banquet and Silent Auction
Friday, February 17, 2012   *   6 TO 9 PM
St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church   *  330 W. Coral Gables Dr.   *  Phoenix,  AZ  85023

with special guest speaker, Sr. Helen Prejean

Sister Helen began her prison ministry in 1981 when she dedicated her life to the poor of New Orleans. While living in the St. Thomas housing project, she became pen pals with Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers, sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana's Angola State Prison.
Upon Sonnier's request, Sister Helen repeatedly visited him as his spiritual advisor. In doing so, her eyes were opened to the Louisiana execution process. Sister Helen turned her experiences into the book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States.  In January 1996, the book was developed into a major motion picture.

Fifteen years after beginning her crusade, the Roman Catholic sister has witnessed five executions in Louisiana and today educates the public about the death penalty by lecturing, organizing and writing. As the founder of "Survive," a victim's advocacy group in New Orleans, she continues to counsel not only inmates on death row, but the families of murder victims, as well.

AEC SPRING EVENTS

Faith and the Fence:  An Inter-Religious Youth conference on Immigration
March 4, 2012     *     3 to 8 PM
Pilgrim's Rest Church     *     1401 E. Jefferson St.     *     Phoenix,  AZ  85034

There are few issues that have been so divisive in our state as immigration. Even in our houses of worship.  What should be the faithful response to a problem that is not only political, but touches the very lives of people who are in our communities.  We all want to do the right thing, and that means knowing the facts. We are inviting high school teens and young adults from our Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities to find another way.
THIS IS A FREE PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES DINNER!

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

An exerpt from the sermon for The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity...

"And that’s what needs to happen for us, in our ecumenical and larger Christian community here in this state.  We need to talk, not just about the easy issues, the issues where we all agree, but also about the hard issues, the issues we avoid because we don’t want to upset people or we are afraid of where the conversation will lead.  So we start with what is our present spiritual reality:  we have been changed by the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Rev. Jan Olav Flaaten, Executive Director
January 24, 2012

GIVE A YEAR-END TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION

December 31, 2011

Dear Friends,

When I think of the many people who speak encouraging words on the way, or who dedicate many hours to our common work, or who support us in prayer, I think of St. Paul’s opening in his letter to the Philippians.

I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.  I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:3-6)

It has been my own great joy to work with so many people who understand what is at stake in the work of ecumenism, the witness of the Church to the grace of God in Jesus Christ.  They wrestle with the new reality of our world, they bring passion and compassion to the work we do on behalf of the vulnerable, they work hard to preserve our creation, and all the while finding co-workers with whom they can pray.   And the work continues.
